LUCKNOW: The two-day 'Sensitization Workshop' on Employability skills for ITI Principals in Uttar Pradesh started on Thursday at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Lucknow. This programme is being organized by TCS in association with Government of UP (GoUP) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). 100 principals of ITIs were nominated by GoUP from across the state to attend this programme. This is a first of its kind training programme and has been prepared keeping in mind the need to make ITI pass-outs more employable.
The two-day, full time, extensive and rigorous sensitization workshop was inaugurated by the chief guest Alok Kumar, IAS, principal secretary - vocational education, GoUP. While addressing the principals on this occasion, he said that the primary objective of the initiative is to sensitize the principals about the importance of effective industry engagement and collaboration beyond technical trade knowledge which are essential to make ITI pass-outs more employable.
The programme covers crucial areas such as bridging the campus - corporate gap, team building, effective communication skills, essentials of job readiness, life skills, etc. These sessions are being conducted by industry experts from companies like TCS, Hero Motors, Airtel, Aegis,Maruti Suzuki, Indian Army, Medha (an American NGO), etc. TCS is offering this service absolutely free of charge to GoUP-CII as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This initiative is is considered a substantive step under Public Private Partnership towards India's skill development mission.
Alok Kumar announced that retired teachers can now be given contractual jobs to address the problem of faculty shortages in UP's ITIs. He also said that with an increased budgetary outlay, new ITIs would be opened, service sector courses will be introduced and manufacturing trades would be rationalized.
He also appreciated the principals attending this training and development programme and hoped that the knowledge and experience they gain from this programme would help them in making their students more employable. He added that recognizing the focus on skilling Indian youth, UP's vocational education department would henceforth be called vocational education and skill development department. He shared that UP's Skill Development Mission has become fully functional which will become a game changer for UP.
The employability of Indian students is rather low as compared to other students which results into mass unemployment and also deprives the country of leveraging a rich demographic dividend. Keeping this in mind, "TCS in association with GoUP and CII is conducting this programme. We had conducted a training and development programme for the principals of government polytechnics in UP which was well received and appreciated by all participants, said Jayant Krishna, co-chairman, CII Northern Region Task Force on Skills and Education and Principal Consultant & Regional Head, TCS.
