Why Is Bluetooth Called Bluetooth ?

Have you ever thought Why Is Bluetooth Called Bluetooth?

When two devices need to talk to each other, they need to have a handshake on various parameters
before the conversation starts. The first agreement is on the medium – will they use wires, or talk over
some wireless signal? Bluetooth is one such wireless signal (protocol) over which two (or more) devices communicate over.

Strange name though isn’t it – are the Bluetooth waves invisible but blue and shaped like teeth?
Wrong! There is absolutely no relation between the name and the meaning.

The Bluetooth protocol was created by Ericsson (pre-Sony Ericsson) which is a major Swedish
telecommunication company. They named it after the Danish viking king, Harald Blåtand. As legend goes, Blåtandhad the blessed ability to bring people negotiate with each other, and come to talking terms. So skilled was he, that he was able to unite Denmark and Norway together! The literal translation of Blåtand means blue-tooth, hence the name Bluetooth for the protocol. It does precisely what Blåtand did – lets two wireless device to communicate with each other!

The Bluetooth symbol has HaraldBlåtand’sinitials inscribed into it (in Runic).
The two lines sticking out of the back of the B
actually represent a Runic H – thats
H for Harald .The B for Bluetooth also stands for .

File Management Tricks

Rename files sequentially in Windows You actually don’t need to download any programs to perform a batch file rename in Windows. Instead, you can select all the files you want to change, right-click the first one in the list, select rename (or use F2), and type in the name. This will automatically change all the other files with the same root name with a suffix: (1), (2), and so on.

Select multiple files using the keyboard To select a bunch of files using your keyboard, you can press Shift + down arrow to select a single file or Shift + Page Down to select a large group of files at one time.

Chinese internet companies sue Baidu for online piracy

Chinese internet companies sue Baidu for online piracy
A group of Chinese internet firms, including Tencent Holdings and Sohu.Com, has joined a top US film industry body in seeking 300 million yuan ($49.2 million) in damages from China's Baidu and QVOD for copyright violation.

BEIJING: A group of Chinese internet firms, including Tencent Holdings and Sohu.Com, has joined a top US film industry body in seeking 300 million yuan ($49.2 million) in damages from China's Baidu and QVOD for copyright violation.

The Joint Action Against Online Video Piracy in China, which also includes Youku Tudou, Dalian Wanda Group and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), said in a statement that Baidu and others had been using an automated process to obtain content from the other companies.

Baidu, the largest internet search engine in China, said in a statement it was committed to fighting piracy.

A spokeswoman for Shenzhen-based software company QVOD said: "We are just a video player, we don't provide content." She declined to elaborate on the piracy allegations.

QVOD's mobile and desktop video player links to the web and allows users to stream videos.

China has long been known for its weak intellectual property protection and enforcement, leading to numerous disputes with the United States.

If successful, the case could hurt Baidu's business in the online video market, which was worth 3.25 billion yuan in advertising in the third quarter and is estimated to create 16.2 billion yuan in sales next year.

Baidu shelled out $370 million to acquire PPStream in May, to merge with its own iQiyi.com video site, and in September announced the launch of a line of Smart TV products.

"We can't continue to compete in the situation because law-abiding people can't survive in a place where robbers and thieves rampage," Charles Zhang, chief executive of Beijing-based Sohu.Com, told a news conference on Wednesday.

Zhang said that efforts to negotiate with Baidu had been unsuccessful, and Baidu refused to stop violating copyright until QVOD also agreed to stop pirating videos.

Baidu said in a statement it has "always attached a great deal of importance to the issue of copyright protection in the video industry" and that piracy is a shared problem for the domestic video industry which it would continuously strengthen its efforts to fight.

"We hope to collaborate with industry partners and, through technological innovation and close collaboration, together promote the development the legalisation of the video industry," it said.

Samsung becomes top handset seller globally

Samsung becomes top handset seller globally
Samsung Electronics became the world 's no.1 handset seller across all continents in the third quarter, according to a US-based market researcher.
SEOUL: Samsung Electronics became the world 's no.1 handset seller across all continents in the third quarter, a US-based market researcher said.

Samsung ranked first in terms of global handset sales in the third quarter in all six continents, including North America, Western Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Eastern Europe as well as Middle East and Africa, where Samsung beat Nokia for the first time, Xinhua cited from a report by Strategic Analytics.

Samsung sold a total of 120.1 million mobile phones across the globe in the third quarter, taking up the market share of 28.6 percent.

The company sold 15.8 million mobile phones in the Middle East and African region during the quarter, higher than Nokia's 14.7 million sales. Samsung's market share in the region was 36.4 percent, jumping from 24.4 percent last year.

In Western Europe, difference of market share between Samsung and Nokia widened to 27.7 percentage points in the third quarter, with the gaps in Latin America and Eastern Europe gaining to 13.4 percentage points and 14.4 percentage points respectively.

In the North American region, Samsung's market share declined 3. 4 percentage points in the third quarter due to the launch of Apple's new models, but the South Korean company maintained the no. 1 position in the region with a market share 9 percentage points higher than Apple's.

Android tops 80% marketshare, WP grows 156% in Q3: IDC

Android tops 80% marketshare, WP grows 156% in Q3: IDC
According to International Data Corporation's (IDC) worldwide quarterly mobile phone tracker, Android accounted for 81% of all smartphone shipments in the the third quarter of 2013.

NEW DELHI: Google's Android operating system has reached a new milestone. According to International Data Corporation's (IDC) worldwide quarterly mobile phone tracker, Android accounted for 81% of all smartphone shipments in the the third quarter of 2013. This is for the first time that Android marketshare has topped 80%.

While Android, as a whole, moved forward, the vast majority of its vendors still struggle to find meaningful market share. Samsung accounted for 39.9% of all Android shipments for the quarter, while the rest of the vendors either saw single-digit market share or, in the case of the majority of vendors, market share of less than 1%.

Microsoft's Windows Phone too saw a blazing growth. The operating system posted the largest year-over-year growth worldwide of any of the leading operating systems, it grew an amazing 156% year over year. Granted, volumes started from a small base of 3.7 million units a year ago and overall market share is still less than five percent. But Microsoft's efforts, with Nokia's support behind it, helped drive the platform into multiple tiers and price points.

iOS, despite seeing its total volumes increase and reaching new record third quarter volumes, saw its market share decline during the third quarter, most likely due to soft demand in the weeks leading up to the launch of iOS 7 smartphones. Still, if the 9 million units sold during the last week of September is any indication of future adoption, iOS stands to reap another record quarter in terms of volumes, market share, and year-over-year growth.

BlackBerry recorded the largest year-over-year decline among the leading operating systems during the quarter. Underpinning its results was softer demand for its new BB10 operating system and continued demand for its older BB7 within emerging markets. Now with a new CEO in place and an infusion of $1 billion, what remains to be seen is how and when the beleaguered operating system will be able to change course in the face of mounting pressure from Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.
Despite high saturation rates in a number of mature markets, the overall smartphone space grew 39.9% year-over-year in the third quarter.
"Android and Windows Phone continued to make significant strides in the third quarter. Despite their differences in market share, they both have one important factor behind their success: price," said Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's mobile phone team. "Both platforms have a selection of devices available at prices low enough to be affordable to the mass market, and it is the mass market that is driving the entire market forward."

Smartphone average selling prices (ASPs) have continued to decline as the appetite for more affordable devices grows. ASPs were down -12.5% in 3Q13, accounting for an average price of $317. At the same time, the market has seen a large influx of large-screen smartphones (5-7" screens), also known as phablets. Large-screen devices generally come with a higher selling price than smaller screen devices, due to the need for more powerful and expensive components. Phablet ASPs in 3Q13 were notably higher than the market average at $443. However, the 3Q13 ASP was down -22.8% from the $573 phablet ASP in 3Q12.

"Almost all successful Android vendors have added one or more 5-7-inch phablets to their product portfolios," said Ryan Reith, programme director with IDC's worldwide quarterly mobile phone tracker. "And Nokia's recent announcement of the Lumia 1320 and 1520 put them in the category as well. In 3Q13, phablet shipments accounted for 21% of the smartphone market, up from just 3% a year ago. We believe the absence of a large-screen device may have contributed to Apple's inability to grow share in the third quarter."

Apple may hire GlobalFoundries to make iPhone, iPad chips
Apple is expected to hire chip manufacturer GlobalFoundries to make some of the chips used in its iPhones and iPads.
WASHINGTON: Apple is expected to hire chip manufacturer GlobalFoundries to make some of the chips used in its iPhones and iPads.

GlobalFoundries could soon begin manufacturing some of Apple's chips at its Fab 8 factory in Malta, NY, CNET reports.

Presently, Samsung makes the majority of chips for Apple's mobile devices, which includes Apple's powerful new A7 chip that is used in the iPhone 5S, the report added.

Apple has been looking to expand its chip partners and decrease its dependency on Samsung, after the two companies have fiercely fought over patents and smartphone competition over the last few years.

The tech giant is also said to be in talks with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for making chips for its upcoming mobile devices.

However, Samsung will continue to work on the A7 series of chips and TSMC will do A8, A9, and A9X chips, the report added

Teens prefer WhatsApp over Facebook

Teens prefer WhatsApp over Facebook
Facebook is reportedly witnessing a decrease in its daily users, especially teens, who have started to prefer mobile messaging apps like WhatsApp and WeChat, over the social networking giant.
LONDON: Facebook is reportedly witnessing a decrease in its daily users, especially teens, who have started to prefer mobile messaging apps like WhatsApp and WeChat, over the social networking giant.

Facebook admitted that it was a decrease in daily teen users, indicating that they are still on the site but not using it as much.

According to the Guardian, the mass exodus from the social networking giant is attributed to the coming of messaging apps like WhatsApp, WeChat and KakaoTalk, which host free instant messages through a phone's data connection.

Unlike Facebook, these apps promote dynamic real-time chatting with different groups of real-life friends, because one gets to connect with people who already exist in their phone book.

WhatsApp, established in 2009, is the biggest messaging app in the world by users, with more than 350 million monthly active users globally, putting Twitter's 218 million users behind.

The report said that since apps like these shun advertising, provide a more private sharing space like in SnapChat, and some like Kakao Talk offer services other than simple messaging or photo sharing, which includes gaming and music sharing.

However, these Asian apps are yet to woo the US users because of the stylized nature of their interfaces, vivid colours, characters and lettering, as the market there is used to being a little more subdued.

Pune girl wins Google's doodle contest

Pune girl wins Google's doodle contest

NEW DELHI: Gayatri Ketharaman, a 15-year-old girl, from Pune won Doodle4Google contest for 2013 with a doodle titled 'Sky's The Limit for Indian Women'. The winning doodle will feature on Google India's homepage on November 14.

Google holds the doodle contest for school kids in India every year on a particular theme and features the winning entry on its homepage on Children's Day. For this year, the theme was 'celebrating the Indian women'. Google Indiamanaging director Rajan Anandan said the company received over 1.5 lakh entries this year.

Gayatri, currently a student of class 10 at the Bishop's Co-Ed School in Pune, has been taking part in the contest for last four years. She came close to winning in 2011 when her doodle on 'India's gift to the world' was among the shortlisted entries. But this year she finally succeeded with a doodle that celebrates the Indian woman and her life.

"It took me around a week to complete the doodle once I started working on it. But before that I spend several weeks thinking about the theme and how best I can represent the ideas I had in my mind about Indian women," Gayatri told TOI. "My doodle attempts to show different qualities of Indian women."

The doodle, which has to resemble the word Google, starts with a dancing woman who is arched to represent G. Gayatri says that the figure represents the grace and feminine side of Indian women. In place of two Os, Gayatri has used one rupee coin and a symbol for home, representing how Indian women take care of work as well as home. In place of G, there are earth and moon, showing that the Indian women are go-getters. In place of L, there is a woman holding a kid, showing caring nature of Indian women and in place of E, there is a police cap, which shows that when required Indian women can wear different hats and can be tough and brave.

This year the Doodle4Google contest had three categories. Category one was for students from class 1 to 3, category two was for students from class 4 to 6 and category three was for students from class 7 to 10. The category one was won by Madhuram Vatsal from Lucknow, category two was won by Binita Biswajeeta from Balasore and the category three was won by Akash Shetty from Mangalore. Gayatri was the overall winner.

Google said that before deciding the winners, it had selected 12 finalists. All of them have been given a Chromebook as well as a few other prizes.

"The entries this year have come from across the country which is a clear indication that we are well underway to taking the internet to the next billion," said Anandan.

Google often features doodles on its homepage to mark important moments like holiday or historical event. It also often pays homage to scientists, inventors and other notable persons on its homepage through dedicated doodles.

End of Windows XP: 34K bank branches to be hit

End of Windows XP: 34K bank branches to be hit
Over 34,000 branches of Indian public sector banks would become vulnerable as the popular Windows XP operating system would no longer be supported by Microsoft, shows a study.

NEW DELHI: Over 34,000 branches of Indian public sector banks would become vulnerable as the popular Windows XP operating system would no longer be supported by Microsoft in about 150 days, shows a study conducted by the software giant.

The study on the Indian banking sector, conducted by Ascentius Consulting on behalf of Microsoft, said penetration of Windows XP in the sector is as high 70 per cent.

"Some 34,115 Indian PSU bank branches are at risk, thanks to their reliance on Windows XP. Windows XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft, beginning April 8, 2014, but the study shows that the penetration of Windows XP in the banking sector is still high at 40-70 per cent," Microsoft said in a release.

Amongst the greatest risks facing banks that maintain their Windows XP installations, despite the end of support, are their ability to respond to customers and manage waiting times, it added.

"The fiscal impact of this could be as much as a loss of business opportunity worth Rs 1,100 crore in a day and a loss of income worth Rs 330 crore over a period of 3 days (assuming that a major incident may take 3 days for the systems to come up to normal functioning)," the study said.

A large number of branches that rely on XP, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas may go down and therefore completely "deny service" to customers, it said.

In metro and urban branches, the impact may be as great as 55 per cent of customers face an extended waiting time of up to 30 minutes for an average transaction.

According to a recent Microsoft security intelligence report, XP users are 6 times more likely to be infected than users of modern operating systems like Windows 8.1, despite encountering same amount of threats. XP users are also 21 times more vulnerable.

Microsoft further said that as per a study by research firm IDC in India, companies are prone to spend three times more if they do not put a planned migration strategy in place from the outset .

14 best smartphones in the world

14 best smartphones in the world
As the year nears the end, all major manufacturers – Apple, Samsung, Google, Nokia, Sony, LG etc – are done with their smartphone launches. With the festive season in full swing and the holiday season set to begin, it is the best time to buy a new phone.

Wonder which are the best smartphones in the world? Time to check Business Insider's monthly ranking of the world's reigning smartphones.

iPhone 5S
iPhone 5S

For most people, the iPhone 5S is the best smartphone available.

It strikes the perfect balance of great design, useful features, and app and content selection. The iPhone 5S looks nearly identical to last year's iPhone 5, but sports a better camera and a fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone without a passcode.

HTC One Google Edition
HTC One Google Edition

Just like Samsung, HTC partnered with Google to create a "Google Edition" of its flagship smartphone.

The HTC One Google edition is the best Android phone on the planet. It has the same great design as the one running HTC's software, but has a clean version of Android without any unnecessary extras.

HTC One
HTC One

If you're interested in Android and are locked into a carrier contract, the HTC One is the best phone you can buy.

It has all the best features of any Android phone, wrapped in a gorgeous all-metal design. It's the first Android phone to match Apple's iPhone in design and build quality

Motorola Moto X
Motorola Moto X

The Moto X is one of the best phones we've used recently. It runs a nearly clean version of Android, but Motorola added a few hand tricks like the ability to quickly check notifications from the lock screen

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition
Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition

Samsung and Google have partnered together to offer a special edition of the Galaxy S4. The "Google Edition" strips out all the software extras from Samsung and instead has a "clean" version of Android, straight from Google.

The basic version of Android is one of the best, and it's great to see it running on Samsung's

Samsung Galaxy S4
Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 phone was one of the most hyped devices of the year. It's a good phone, but could be a bit too much for some people. That's because Samsung packed the S4 full of noisy and complex features that you'd probably never use. It's also covered in cheap-feeling plastic, which could be a turn off for some people.

iPhone 5C
iPhone 5C

The iPhone 5C is one of Apple's two new iPhones. It replaces the iPhone 5 in Apple's smartphone lineup, but that's because it has most of the same specs and features.

The only difference is that the iPhone 5C is made out of plastic that comes in five colour options: blue, pink, green, yellow, or white

Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Samsung popularized the "phablet" category with the Galaxy Note two years ago. Now the phone is in its third generation with the Galaxy Note 3.

The Galaxy Note 3 has the biggest screen yet, 5.7 inches, yet its body is actually thinner and lighter than last year's model. It also comes with a special stylus called the S Pen for drawing or taking notes

LG G2
LG G2

The G2 is LG's newest flagship smartphone. It has a gorgeous 5.2-inch display and one of the most current versions of Android. But it does have one odd design quirk: the power and volume buttons are located on the back of the phone, making it a but awkward to use at first

LG Optimus G Pro
LG Optimus G Pro

LG's Optimus G Pro is the company's flagship phablet, or smartphone with a screen so huge that it's almost a tablet. The Optimus has a 5.5-inch display that can play full 1080p HD video. If you like giant screens, this is a great device

Nokia Lumia 925
Nokia Lumia 925

Nokia's Lumia 925 is the best Windows phone you can buy. It's the most attractive of Nokia's Lumia devices and includes a really good camera. If you're interested in Windows Phones, this is the first smartphone to consider

Nokia Lumia 1020
Nokia Lumia 1020

By most accounts, Nokia's flagship phone, the Lumia 1020, has the best camera of any smartphone. If photos are your top priority, then this should be one of the first phones you look at.

But there are a few drawbacks. The Lumia 1020 is very thick and heavy compared to most smartphones in order to make room for that fancy camera. There's even a giant bulge on the back. It's also a Windows Phone, which doesn't have the same robust app selection as iPhone or Android.
BlackBerry Q10
BlackBerry Q10

If you absolutely must have a phone with a physical keyboard, the BlackBerry Q10 is your best (and pretty much only) option.

Like the Z10, the Q10 runs the new BlackBerry 10 operating system. The phone is great for those who want an old-school look and feel. However, the only reason to buy this phone is for the keyboard. There are far better options out there

BlackBerry Z10
BlackBerry Z10

Even though it hasn't been a hit with consumers, the BlackBerry Z10 is still a pretty good phone.

The device is the first to run BlackBerry's new BlackBerry 10 operating system, which is pretty good but doesn't offer much past what iPhones and Android phones can do. BlackBerry 10 also has a very poor app selection, so you shouldn't buy this phone if you like having the latest and greatest apps.
